In the heart of the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world, lies one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Chile: the Valley of the Moon. With its rugged terrain, rock formations sculpted by nature, and a silent, desolate atmosphere, this corner of the Los Flamencos National Reserve offers an experience that feels like it’s from another planet. It’s no coincidence that its name evokes Earth’s natural satellite: walking here is the closest you can get to stepping on the Moon.

Why is it called the Valley of the Moon?

The name “Valley of the Moon” is due to the incredible resemblance of its landscape to the lunar surface. Wind erosion, the almost total absence of vegetation, and the accumulation of salt on the rocks create a rugged, whitish terrain that looks extraterrestrial. The irregular geological formations, large dunes, and natural craters contribute to a setting that seems to be straight out of a space mission. For decades, scientists and explorers have used this place as a study field to understand extreme geological and climatological phenomena. It has even been considered by NASA as an ideal site to simulate planetary conditions due to its similarity to Mars and the Moon.

Where is the Valley of the Moon located?

The Valley of the Moon is located just 13 kilometers west of San Pedro de Atacama, in the Antofagasta Region, northern Chile. It is part of the Salt Mountain Range, an ancient seabed raised by tectonic movements, and is situated within the Los Flamencos National Reserve, managed by CONAF. Access is easy and direct from the town of San Pedro, whether by vehicle, traditional or electric bicycle, or guided tour. Its proximity allows for a half-day visit, although many prefer to spend more time exploring it calmly and admiring its geological and visual details.

Unique features of the Valley of the Moon

What makes the Valley of the Moon special is not only its appearance but also the sensations it evokes:

Formations sculpted by nature: Over millions of years, wind and occasional rain have shaped the terrain, creating ridges, caves, canyons, and salt-covered plains. Some iconic formations include Las Tres Marías, the Amphitheater, the Great Dune, and the Kari Viewpoint.

Colors and textures in constant change: During the day, sunlight transforms the landscape. In the morning, the terrain takes on golden and reddish hues, while at sunset, the sky and rocks are painted with violet and orange colors, creating a magical atmosphere that changes minute by minute.

Extreme and silent climate: The Valley of the Moon is one of the driest places on the planet. The absence of humidity and vegetation makes it a site of absolute silence, ideal for total disconnection. Temperatures can vary drastically between day and night, so it is important to be prepared.

Geological and astronomical fascination: The valley is not only a tourist attraction but also a site of interest for astronomers, geologists, and science enthusiasts. The dry conditions and low light pollution in the area allow for privileged astronomical observation.
