Overview
Cerro El Plomo is a great sports challenge, as well as a wonderful experience. With an altitude of 5,424 meters above sea level, it is the highest mountain in the valley of Santiago city. It poses an exceptional challenge for mountaineering enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers.
Itinerary
On our first day, we will meet at 8:30 AM at the Valle Nevado Hotel. We will start with a fairly gentle trek suitable for everyone with the objective of approaching the BASE CAMP and acclimatizing to attack the summit. The start is from Valle Nevado or La Parva, where we walk for 4 hours with a vertical drop of approximately 750 meters, until we reach Federación at 4,100 meters above sea level. We have the support of local muleteers from Farellones, so our walk will be light and enjoyable, enjoying the journey.
We start in the early hours of the morning with the goal of reaching the summit. This day is much tougher than the first day, but with a slower pace and calmly. Reaching the summit takes between 7 and 9 hours depending on the physical condition and the weather conditions that arise. During the journey, we will be able to see the stone wall where the Lead Boy was found, the first discovery of a human body in perfect condition, from an Inca sacrifice. Next, we will cross a section of the Iver glacier. At this time of year and due to different factors, it is ice-free and allows us to cross without the need for crampons. Eventually, if there were precipitation, it could be covered in snow and then we would use crampons and the necessary protection to cross it. Then, just a few minutes later, we reach the ridge line and after a few meters of walking, we perceive the most anticipated part of this day: with an incredible view, we will be able to appreciate the Apu Wamani, named as such by the Incas.
The third and last day starts more calmly, and after a replenishing breakfast, we will enjoy the mountain, stretch a bit to recover from our feat, and then start the return to the starting meeting point. It will be a spectacular hike where we can see Inca vestiges and more than one condor circling the area. If the ascent is from La Parva, the return will be through a ski slope. If everything goes smoothly, we should be back at the house by 5:00 pm.
*It is important to consider these things before signing up for our expedition: It is necessary to arrive prepared, with a good physical condition and the necessary clothing to face this great challenge. Climbing Cerro Pintor 4,100 the previous weekend will allow you to acclimatize and arrive better prepared. Sleeping at high altitude the previous week can be very helpful. Increase your hydration in the days leading up to the expedition.
