Overview
THE RIDE:
This full day MTB in Punta Arenas is an option for the ones who want to do a mountain bike experience in our city. Our trails are located next to down town, about 20 min from the main square. Our trail selection its thinking to have a complete experience in the Patagonian forest and mountains. A mixture of old trails, dual tracks and single tracks will be part of our experience. In our ride we will make several stops for pictures in some of the most scenic lookouts of the city, the Estrecho de Magallanes and the Brunswick peninsula.
SKILL LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE
You have been mountain biking regularly for at least the last 2 years. You can brake, use gears and you are a confident cornering You have good bike handling skills, and are confident riding rough double track and non-technical single track You are competent at riding undulating trails with moderate climbs and descents on both double and single track, but tend to get off and walk technical single track sections.
FITNESS LEVEL:
You have a good level of bike fitness, exercising at least three times every week throughout the year, for an hour at a time. You can ride a mountain bike for up to six hours a day at a moderate velocity, with snack and photo stops. You can tackle two or three fairly significant climbs a day, up to 600 m.
Itinerary
9:00 Pick up at your hostel-hotel-air b&b.
9:15 Transfer to the "spider sector" to start the excursion.
9:20 On-site disinfection of bicycles for passengers to see the procedure. Delivery of bicycles previously set according to the height and weight of each passenger. Delivery of disposable gloves. Delivery of box lunch according to dietary restrictions to each passenger.
9:30 Technical talk and safety procedures for cyclists (DAS). This talk includes an induction to the use of the bicycle, body positioning to face different obstacles, how to use gears and brakes. Information on procedures in case of an accident.
9:50 Reset of bicycles to have them completely comfortable for passengers.
10:00 The excursion begins through the "spider sector", facing different climbs, with two defined stops to appreciate nature, with views of Seno Otway and the Strait of Magellan. Here begins our first descent. After this descent, we return to our transport that will take us to the second spot. Approximate pedaling time of 1 hour uphill, plus 2 stops of 10 minutes and a descent of approximately 15 minutes. Depending on the weather conditions, we make stops to take photos of passengers in the most entertaining places (banked turns, jumps, forest).
11:45 Transfer to the second spot (north bank of the mines river).
12:00 We start pedaling through the Patagonian forest and old logging roads, entering private properties and the Magallanes Forest Reserve. Along the way, we have the possibility of seeing puma footprints, bird watching such as Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Magellanic Woodpecker, Nothofagus forest mushrooms. In this sector, we do 2 classic climbs and 2 descents, just like in our previous circuit, we have defined stops, one to see the mines river canyon at its source and a general view of the city of Punta Arenas facing the Strait of Magellan. Our time in this sector is 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours in a loop, depending on the weather conditions. We will have our box lunch in the area.
14:00 We start our transfer to the Forest Reserve and Andean Club sector, this is the sector where we have more enduro tracks. Gentle climbs and very entertaining descents. It will take us 15 minutes. In this sector, we will ride through Patagon Park (a new space for MTB practice), which has an uphill trail and 5 descents. After this, we will pedal to the Andean Club sector where we have the use of a chairlift to make 4-5 more descents.
17:00 End of our Full day MTB. Total excursion time 7 hours.
