The El Plomo Mountain, with its impressive 5,424 meters above sea level, is the highest mountain visible from Santiago on clear days. Located in the heart of the Andes mountain range, on the mountain range that rises behind Farellones, this mountain is not only a high mountain challenge, but also a historical and cultural sanctuary that was part of the Inca worldview as an Apu; a protective spirit of the valleys.
Its proximity to the capital and access through routes known as La Parva or Valle Nevado make it one of the favorite destinations for mountaineers looking for a high-altitude challenge in a few days. And with Outdoor Index, it is possible to experience this adventure safely, organized, and with the support of expert guides.
Location and access from Farellones
The Cerro El Plomo is located in the Metropolitan Region, in the high mountain sector facing Santiago. From the city, the road leads through the route to Farellones, from where you can access the ski resorts La Parva or Valle Nevado. These are the most common starting points for the expedition.
The proximity to Farellones allows for a few hours' approach before entering the mountain territory, crossing high-altitude landscapes, rivers, lagoons, and plains surrounded by snowy peaks.
A mountain with a millenary history
The Cerro El Plomo is not only a mountaineering objective, it is also an archaeological site of great value. In 1954, mountaineers found on its summit the mummy of an Inca child, approximately nine years old, along with offerings and ceremonial items. This discovery was part of a Capacocha ritual, in which the Incas made sacrifices in honor of their gods.
The site of the stone enclosure where this child was found remains part of the route to the summit, reminding us of the spiritual and cultural importance this mountain had in pre-Hispanic times.
The best months to visit Cerro El Plomo
The best time to make the ascent is from November to March, when the weather is more stable and the snow on the route does not present extreme accumulations. In spring, snowy sections can still be found, while in summer the terrain is drier and the longer days favor marching.
The best itinerary to visit Cerro El Plomo
At Outdoor Index we offer the expedition to Cerro El Plomo in a 3 days and 2 nights program, designed to enjoy the mountain safely, comfortably, and with the support of certified guides.
Day 1 - Approach day
We meet at 8:30 AM at the Valle Nevado Hotel. We start with a gentle trek suitable for everyone, focused on the approach to the Base Camp and acclimatization for the summit push. We depart from Valle Nevado or La Parva, walking about 4 hours with an approximate elevation gain of 750 meters until we reach the Campamento Federación (4,100 meters above sea level).
We have the support of local muleteers from Farellones, which allows us to carry a light backpack and enjoy the journey more. This first day gives us spectacular views of the mountain range and a high-altitude environment that prepares us physically and mentally for the challenge.
Day 2 - Summit day
We start early in the morning, advancing calmly and at a steady pace. The total ascent to the summit takes between 7 and 9 hours, depending on physical and weather conditions. During the route, we pass by the historic stone enclosure of the Niño del Plomo, a testimony of the first finding of a human body in perfect condition as a result of an Inca sacrifice.
Then we cross the Iver glacier. At this time of year, it is usually ice-free, so crampons are not required, although in case of snow we will use all the necessary equipment to cross it safely. A few minutes after this section, we ascend to the summit ridge and, after a final effort, we reach the summit to contemplate the impressive view of the Apu Wamani and the surrounding peaks, including the Tupungato and, on clear days, the Aconcagua.
After enjoying the summit, we begin the descent along the same route until we return to Campamento Federación, where we will rest and spend the night.
Day 3 - Recovery and return
After a relaxed breakfast at Campamento Federación, we enjoy the mountain and do stretching exercises to recover from the previous day. From there, we start the descent, crossing high-altitude landscapes again, observing Inca vestiges, and, with luck, spotting condors flying over the valley. With a good pace and no setbacks, we will be back around 5:00 PM at the starting point of the expedition.
Required equipment
For this expedition, we recommend:
• High mountain boots.
• Layered clothing (thermal base layer, fleece, and windbreaker).
• Hat and gloves.
• Trekking poles.
