In the depths of the Atacama Desert, the Lascar Volcano stands out as one of the most impressive destinations for high-altitude trekking enthusiasts. With its 5,592 meters above sea level, this volcano in the Antofagasta Region offers a unique experience in the Chilean highlands: walking through volcanic landscapes, feeling the power of the Earth beneath your feet, and peering into a crater that never stops breathing.
What makes the Lascar Volcano so special?
Unlike many other volcanoes in Chile, Lascar remains active and its crater emits visible fumaroles almost every day of the year. Far from being an imminent risk, this makes it a living geological gem that you can explore on foot, with the necessary precautions and accompanied by expert guides.
From the summit, the views are simply breathtaking: salt flats, highland lagoons, and neighboring volcanoes like Licancabur, Aguas Calientes, and Sairecabur form a landscape that seems from another planet.
Where is it and how to get to the starting point?
The Lascar Volcano is located about 70 km southeast of San Pedro de Atacama. Most excursions depart early from the town, crossing high-altitude routes that allow acclimatization and enjoyment of the surroundings. After approximately two hours by vehicle, you reach the Laguna Lejía area, the starting point of the ascent at about 4,800 meters above sea level.
What is the ascent to the Lascar Volcano like?
The hike starts from the highlands and ventures into volcanic terrain. The route is not technical, but demanding due to the altitude. In total, about 700 meters of positive elevation gain are covered, in an estimated time of 5 to 8 hours round trip, depending on the physical condition and pace of the group.
The trail crosses sandy slopes, loose rocks, and areas exposed to the wind, so it is advisable to be well prepared. Upon reaching the crater, the view of the fumaroles and the endless horizon rewards every step taken.
Who can climb the Lascar Volcano?
Although it is a demanding experience due to the altitude, you do not need to be a professional mountaineer to conquer the Lascar Volcano. It is an ideal route for people in good physical condition or trekking enthusiasts who have already done medium-altitude hikes.
The most important thing is to have good prior acclimatization, as altitude sickness can affect even the most trained individuals. If you have never been above 4,000 meters above sea level, it is best to start with lower routes in the area, such as Valle de la Luna, Mirador de Kari, or Piedras Rojas, before attempting this summit.
Many travelers choose Lascar as their first volcano over 5,000 meters, thanks to its accessibility and the fact that it does not require extensive technical equipment. However, doing it with specialized guides ensures not only safety but also a much more enriching experience.
What to bring for this adventure?
To safely ascend Lascar, it is essential to bring:
• Thermal clothing and windbreaker (ideally in layers).
• Trekking shoes with good grip.
• Sunglasses with UV protection.
• Sunscreen and hat Trekking poles (optional, but very useful on the descent).
• Water.
• Energy snacks or nuts.
• Charged camera or cell phone (the photos are out of this world).
Additionally, it is crucial to have spent at least two nights in San Pedro for proper acclimatization. Altitude can affect even trained individuals.
Live an experience that defines the Chilean highlands
Climbing the Lascar Volcano is not just a high-altitude hike. It is immersing yourself in an environment where time seems to stand still, where the silence of the desert blends with the echo of the living Earth. This route is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular to feel the strength and beauty of the Chilean highlands in its maximum expression.
